Jonny Clayton progresses to the second round of the 2024 World Grand Prix after a convincing 2-0 win against Ritchie Edhouse, the 2021 World Grand Prix winner showed glimpses of his best but admits he’s been close to ‘quitting’ darts recently.

Jonny Clayton looked back to his former best after beating Richie Edhouse 2-0 in their first round clash at the 2024 World Grand Prix

At one stage, Clayton had a 103 avg and had checked out 4/4 darts at a finish as it looked like he was going to contest the highest average ever at the World Grand Prix.

After an Edhouse fight back, his stats dropped by the time he saw the game out 2-0, but seeing The Ferret fully on form is evidence that he’s keen to get back to his best.

Going into the World Grand Prix, Clayton admitted that he’s starting to get angry again when he loses a game and that’s what he needs to get back to ‘the old Jonny Clayton’.

The reason he is making comments like this though is because he’s now revealed that he’d been considering quitting darts recently due to his form.

Jonny Clayton Admits He Has Been Close to Quitting Darts

Jonny Clayton had the best season of his career in 2021 winning the World Grand Prix, The Masters, Premier League of Darts and the World Series of Darts Finals.

In the 2022 and 2023 seasons he wasn’t quite as successful, but still won the World Cup of Darts and had some runner-up placings in major tournaments.

2024 has been a season for Clayton to forget so far though…

He’s had early round exits in all the major competitions he’s played in and In his post match interview he’s admitted that his form has had him considering quitting the game.

He said:

“For the last year probably I’ve not been bothered at all [with darts].

“But, yeah there’s a bit of fire in the belly again. I’m hungry.”

When asked if it annoyed him watching others winning when he though it could/should be him, Clayton responded:

“Yeah, of course it does. Listen, I’m a darts player, I want to be the best in my sport.

“I have to be honest, in the last year it could have been packing up time but I’m back enjoying it, I’ve got a smile on my face and I don’t like losing so that’s a good thing for The Ferret.”

With the start he’s had this evening, it would seem as though he’s not just talking a good game but genuinely seems to be up for it.

He’s already got the experience of winning this tricky tournament so if he can keep this run going it’s not too difficult to see Clayton getting back to his best form.
