Phil Taylor was a monster in darts. A different animal.
He dominated an era and we want to list his unbelievable records.
Some of these records are just mind boggling and to say one is better than the other is not our place, so this is just a general list rather than a ranked one.
(We tried to rank them but really couldn’t)
We also didn’t even list all of his records. There are just too many so we’ve just cherry picked his best.
The only one we’ve left off that you could consider a big one is his number of titles.
He’s won 214 titles and 85 majors but MVG is having a good go at breaking that one so it didn’t quite make the list.
For reference, MVG has 153 PDC titles and 62 majors.
We’re saying this early because once we get into Taylor’s other records, no one is even REMOTELY close…
Read on as we reveal 7 ridiculous Phil Taylor records that broke darts:
6 Unbreakable Phil Taylor Records
Won 16 World Darts Championships
Let’s get this list started with the most obvious record that may never be broken.
During his career, Phil Taylor won 2 BDO World Championships and 14 PDC World Championships bringing his total tally to 16 World Darts Championships.
If you’re unsure of how impressive that is, second place is Raymond van Barneveld with 4 BDO World Championships and 1 PDC World Championship.
Tied with Eric Bristow who has 5 BDO World Championships.
The closest active player who could still beat this tally (sorry ‘Barney’) is Michael van Gerwen.
MVG was dominant for an era after Phil Taylor.
He has 3 World Championships…
Yeah, we don’t think this one is in danger of being beaten in our lifetime.
Won 16 World Matchplay Titles
Similar to his record above, this one is equally ridiculous and we like the fact that he felt ‘16’ was the right amount of times to just dominate a tournament.
17 would obviously have been unnecessary…
The World Matchplay is into its 30th year at the time of writing and of those 30 years, Phil Taylor appeared in 24 of them.
That’s a good record in itself that might not be broken. James Wade just made his 19th but did so with a final qualifying place.
16 wins though, no one is touching that.
Michael van Gerwen is second and he has the same amount of wins as he does World Championships, 3.
That’s poetic.
In the two biggest major competitions, Taylor has 16 titles in each. In both, MVG is second to him with 3 each.
How is anyone ever going to close those numbers?
MVG HAS been dominant but with his win rates he’d need to play at the same level for another 70+ years. It’s hard to see a 115 year old MVG finally lift championship number 16.
14 Consecutive World Championship Finals Appearances
Ok, 16 title wins are impressive.
That’s a record that is likely never being beaten but somehow, that isn’t the most impressive record to showcase just how dominant Taylor was during his era.
From 1994 to 2007, Phil Taylor appeared in every single World Championship final, winning 11 and finishing runner-up in 3.
That is a stretch of 14 consecutive finals.
He’s been in more finals consecutively than 90% of pro players have appeared in the tournament.
Again, the only benchmark we have for comparison is MVG, who has the second most finals appearances (not consecutively) at 6.
It’s been over 18 years since someone has made it to more than back-to-back finals and you know who that person was, don’t you…
Was UNBEATEN For 44 Consecutive Premier League Matches (2005 – 2008)
This record will never be broken.
From 2005 to 2008, Phil Taylor won 44 consecutive Premier League matches.
In football, Arsenal are the only club to ever achieve an undefeated season in the Premier League in the 2003-04 season.
For this they were given the title of ‘the invincibles’.
Phil Taylor did this in multiple seasons. He’s literally making a mockery of records at this point.
The format for the Premier League (in darts) has changed which makes this record much harder to try to emulate but not only that, it’s rare for a player to go just two weeks unbeaten now!
Players rarely win back-to-back nights so for someone to do it for three straight years…. Highly unlikely and probably even impossible 🤷🏻♂️
Hit Two Nine-Darters In ONE Match
The nine-dart finish is the ultimate shot in darts.
A leg with 9 perfect darts. For a time this was seen as the holy grail of darts achievements and players hitting it would get a nice bonus payment for their efforts.
As the standard has increased in darts though, we see multiple nine darters in many tournaments these days so a bit of the magic is lost.
Well, hitting a nine-darter is more common now but of course, Phil Taylor has to do one better.
In a 2010 Premier League match against James Wade, Phil Taylor hit TWO nine-darters in just a single match.
Gerwyn Price has hit two in a single night before but no one has come close to replicating this yet.
In honesty, it will take a nine-darter in CONSECUTIVE legs to knock Taylor off his perch for this record.

Won EVERY Ranked Televised Event in 2009
🤯
Phil Taylor was dominant in darts for 15-20 years. He owned his era completely.
There’s dominant though, and then there’s 2009 DOMINANT.
Taylor won all seven ranked televised events in 2009, he literally owned darts and everyone playing it for an entire year.

Unbelievably, Michael van Gerwen came close to replicating this in 2016.
He won 7/8 ranked televised events, but lost the main one (World Championship) in the third round to Raymond van Barneveld.
So close…
We think that is the only time this could have been equalled so what a missed opportunity!
Basically, Phil Taylor has broken darts.
He’s set some records that just can’t be accomplished again.
Can’t is a strong word, there’s a statistical possibility, but come on.
You’ve just read the list, the man has done some wild things during his time at the oche and it’s hard to imagine anyone getting close to his legacy.
Michael van Gerwen, bless him, appears as a contender for most as runner-up but his numbers are fractions compared to that of Taylor’s.
He quite simply is the darts GOAT 🐐
