Adrian Lewis is one of the best darts players of all time and is someone that many consider to be one of the most gifted and naturally talented to ever play the game!
A two-time World Champion, UK Open winner, and frequent finalist in PDC major tournaments, Lewis has a professional resume that few darts players can boast to match.
Labelled Phil Taylor’s protégé after the pair became training partners in Stoke-on-Trent, this partnership would see them win four World Cup of Darts titles for England, the joint most in the competition’s history.
In full flow, Adrian Lewis was a joy to watch. There were occasions where he made playing darts look effortless and some of his results clearly reflected that.
Despite having one of the smoothest throws in darts though, his time at the oche couldn’t always be described as ‘smooth’…

Bust-ups with players (both at major tournaments and on the circuit), fines, and personal issues with family members meant that Lewis was often viewed as someone not living up to his potential – despite being a back-to-back World Champion.
In a recent interview, Lewis admits that he probably should have won more and that his ‘mindset’ was a big factor holding him back…

Adrian Lewis Reveals Why He Should Have Won More in Darts
On a recent podcast episode of Tops & Tales, host and darts referee Huw Ware took the opportunity to ask Adrian Lewis if he felt he had reached his potential in darts.
Something that Lewis doesn’t feel he did do on reflection.
Ware asked: “Do you look back and think maybe you could have won more?”
Lewis responded:
“100%. I think it was more down to my mindset than my ability, I’ve always said it.
“I’d be a lot calmer, I don’t think you’d see me having any scuffles or arguments or anything like that. I think I’d be a completely different player.
“Sometimes it was easy [to play darts] and I did find it easy but when you find it easy, in steps complacency.
“That would be another thing I’d work on as well because you can’t get complacent, certainly with the players today.”
It’s hard to look at Adrian Lewis as a ‘what could have been’ player because he’s a two-time World Champion.
He isn’t someone that failed to live up to his potential, however, you do get the feeling that he could have done so much more were it not for issues outside of just throwing the darts.
For him to acknowledge that his mindset held him back really does show what a talent he was.
