A Natural Talent – Adrian Lewis Shows Us How He Throws Darts

Adrian Lewis is one of the most naturally gifted darts players to ever step onto the oche.

A two-time world champion, Lewis was at his peak during 2011 – 2014 when he was in nine PDC major finals, winning four of them.

A training partner to Phil Taylor whilst also being one of his closest rivals, Lewis is one of those players that shined brightest in darts but his flame didn’t last as long as many would have hoped for.

Issues on and away from the oche definitely hindered Adrian Lewis’ career but when he was on form, few players have ever been as enjoyable to watch in full flow.

In 2015, Lewis – as well as a number of top ranked players – took part in a PDC series named ‘My Throw’.

Here, Rod Harrington would break down each player’s throw to see what made them so great.

For his darts setup, Lewis uses a straight barrel with not too much grip (points out that he added more knurling for the World Matchplay when this was filmed) with a short stem and standard flight combo.

For the grip, Harrington points out that Lewis uses a ‘common’ grip. Thumb toward the back of the barrel, index finger mid barrel and then middle finger on the rear of the point to stabilise the dart.

He says it’s standard but it’s the pullback and release that you really see how EFFORTLESS Lewis makes throwing a dart look.

In terms of the throw, you can hear in the video Lewis simply saying “back and forward”.

It really is that simple, he’s just drawing the dart back and then releasing. Minimal movement anywhere. He’s robotic in his approach but this simplicity just makes it look so easy…

If you want to see just how easy Lewis made it look to throw darts in a pressure situation on stage, here he is hitting a no look 180 🤣

What a legend!
