SMOOTHEST Throw In Darts – Gary Anderson Shows Us How He Throws Darts

Gary Anderson is one of the best darts players to ever step onto the oche.

A two-time World Champion, Gary Anderson reached 21 PDC major finals (so far), winning eight of them during a period that featured prime Phil Taylor and Michael van Gerwen.

‘The Flying Scotsman’ isn’t just an elite darts player though, he’s also a joy to watch.

Anderson is one of the heaviest scorers the game has ever seen and even as he winds his career down at age 53, he currently has the highest running average on the PDC in 2024.

His heavy scoring is combined with one of – if not THE – smoothest darts throws of all time.

In 2015, the reigning World Champion would give Rod Harrington a masterclass in how to throw a dart fluidly and effortlessly.

His setup in terms of dart, grip and stance all seem relatively textbook and simple. He makes it seem as though it’s easy for anyone to replicate, however, very few on the planet can throw a dart quite like Anderson.

Anderson used a dart with a slim and straight barrel, medium shaft and standard flight.

Nothing fancy at all with his set up but we get to see how this setup allows Anderson to have sniper-like accuracy.

Anderson takes a three-finger grip using his thumb and index finger to hold the barrel, he then places his middle finger on the point to which keeps the dart parallel with the tip facing the board.

This allows Anderson to draw the dart right to eye level so that he is essentially looking straight down the dart when aiming.

Harrington points this out as a key contributor to his accuracy.

There’s also a video showing Anderson throwing in slow motion and you can see how stable and steady he is throughout the entire throwing motion.

The only body part moving is the forearm.

In more recent years, Anderson has once again given us an explainer into how he holds and throws his darts.

Without Rod Harrington guiding the conversation, Anderson seems to give a more detailed explanation in this clip.

He mentions how he stands straight up, directly faces the board and comes out with a classic comment when talking about his release:

“It’s just a push through. For me it feels nice and easy”

We’re sure it does feel easy because he makes it look easy, that’s for sure!

It’s not a lie to say we could watch Anderson throw all day and the comments on these videos seem to agree.

@christianbusch1521 – “Still the cleanest throw out there in my opinion 👌”
@user-jc3wy3zp8w – “When Gary is playing well, it’s a sight to behold. Smooth as silk”
@Boy_Ling – “He makes it look so easy”

Across the videos there are dozens of comments basically saying how good his throw is.

If you’re just getting started in darts and want to try and replicate a player’s throw, you won’t find a more textbook throw than Anderson…
