10 WORST Darts Throws of All Time (Don’t Copy These Techniques!!)

Here are Decent Darts we’re always trying to look at darts in a good light and find the most entertaining, positive perspectives we can.

Sometimes though we have to go in the other direction…

Previously we’ve looked at the smoothest darts throws of all time, today we’re doing the opposite.

Below we take a look at some of the worst darts throws of all time.

If you are struggling with your throw, DO NOT copy the techniques from these players:

Mensur Suljovic

Let’s kick things off with a darts icon – Mensur.

Suljovic always had a slightly erratic throw releasing from his shoulder with quite a bit of upper arm movement going on but that isn’t the throw people know him for.

Unfortunately, Suljovic got dartitis and while he has battled through it to become a solid player on the tour over the years, his throw became much more unorthodox.

These days he has to twirl the dart on his setup in order to get into a rhythm. It’s not the worst but it definitely doesn’t look smooth or natural.

Bobby George

Bobby George was a great darts player, legendary darts presenter and we can’t knock his career.

His throwing technique is sketchy to say the least though.

His throw is actually quite smooth but the way he brings the dart to the opposite side of his face looks incredibly unnatural and is far from textbook.

His dominant eye is opposite to his throwing hand so this is the technique he learned to combat that.

Bobby made it work though.

John Henderson

The big Scotsman doesn’t have terrible technique when it comes to throwing the dart, with John, it’s everything around the arm.

He ‘rocks’ his way into each throw.

Backward and forward like a pendulum, it’s one of those things where you think:

“That would get you into a good rhythm”

In reality, you aren’t really supposed to move anything but your forearm/wrist when throwing so how this works for him is anyone’s guess.

Tony Dawkins

Look at someone like Steve Beaton: Stands upright, no body movement, a complete follow through, magnificent.

Tony Dawkins is the opposite.

Body movement everywhere, jumps both upwards and forwards when releasing his dart, moves his back leg, snatches at the release, doesn’t really follow through with his upper arm…

The list is endless, Dawkins does everything that you’re told not to do when throwing a dart 😅

This list isn’t ranked (just to be kind) but if it were, Dawkins is right up there with a shout for worst throw!

Christian Kist

Ok, his actual throw isn’t that bad but we all know why Kist has made this list…

The mouth.

While releasing the dart on each throw, “The Lipstick” has a habit of opening his mouth in time with the release.

This makes him resemble a goldfish.

We can’t really say much more on this.

Sorry Christian, the throw is definitely not the worst but we just can’t ignore the facial expression that goes along with it.

Co Stompe

If you just watched Stompe release a dart, you’d see no issues.

The setup though is hard to watch.

A double-jerk of the forearm that carries up to the shoulder is the opposite of a smooth throwing action.

From the side it doesn’t look terrible but when the camera gives us a front shot from the board’s viewpoint, his arm looks all over the place.

It’s like the weird shoulder/arm shake you do when you’re trying to take off a wet top that is stuck to you.

Do you know how golf players take practice swings, well Stompe does practice throws. Not recommended.

Dennis Smith

As with Stompe, Smith’s throw isn’t the worst but the build up to it. Part magnificent, part ridiculous for a pro.

Dennis Smith twirls his dart with the fanciest, most unnecessary motion you’ll ever see. It’s like he’s cast a spell with his magic wand.

He does it below his eye line when drawing the dart, so it’s not like he’s doing this motion to line it up nicely in his line of sight.

Once he’s done his fancy twirling motion, he then pauses for a good second (almost admiring his motion more than aiming) before FINALLY throwing the dart.

It’s a bit annoying to watch so he must be an absolute nightmare to play against!

Ceri Morgan

His technique is simply wild!

He pulls the dart back over his shoulder as though he is winding up to throw it as far as possible and then instead of fully extending, he stops about ⅔ of the way through on release.

His throw is basically backwards.

Richie Burnett

^ Just watch the video and you’ll know why he’s on this list.

Ritchie Burnett is a legend but this might be the WORST technique you’ll ever see to still hit a 180.

The head-jerk is whiplash inducing but the release on his final dart, we’ve seen ballet dancers use a similar move!

Terry Down

Ok, we’ve baited you with that last one.

We said it wasn’t a ranked list, we said Ritchie Burnett might have the worst throw, but no, it’s Terry Down.

Painfully slow to throw just a single dart.

These players are super frustrating to play against and to watch but Down goes one better.

He pulls the dart to the top of his forehead with the highest arm placement you’ll ever see.

He must have a third eye because we can’t figure out how else he sees where he’s aiming.

There are some criminal techniques on this list but they’ve all played at the highest level so who are we to really judge.

It seems with enough practice and consistency, even the worst techniques can yield good results, so, there’s hope for you all yet!

Still, we wouldn’t recommend learning from them to improve your own game…
