Gary Anderson is one of the best players to ever throw a dart.
‘The Flying Scotsman’ is a two time World Champion and won several PDC major titles during a period that featured prime Phil Taylor and Michael van Gerwen.
At 54 years of age, Anderson has been brutally honest saying that in recent years his focus has been on his family over darts. He is a regular on the floor events of the PDC ProTour but is selective when it comes to entering European Tour events.
He’s only entered two Euro Tour events in 2024 and still won one of them at the European Grand Prix 🤯 From 2017 – 2022 he didn’t even enter a single one!
He’s also not made many deep runs in major tournaments over the last few years but his ability is still undeniable.
He has the highest running average of all players on the ProTour in 2024 but admits his motivation just isn’t there to try and push for wins at the major events.

He simply wants to turn up to “cause an upset for a few of the big dogs” but then get back home to spend time with family.
He’s still a massive name in darts though and despite a lower ranking (20th at the time of writing) he still gets mentioned in Premier League talk due to his fan following.
In a recent interview though, Anderson has talked down any possibility of a Premier League return but hinted at a bigger goal instead…

Gary Anderson Wants to Get To Number 1 and Retire
After reaching the quarter-finals of the European Championship last weekend where he would lose to eventual winner Ritchie Edhouse, Anderson would discuss rankins and the growing impact of the Euro Tour prize money on the overall PDC Order of Merit.

As he is incredibly selective of playing in these tournaments, it makes it harder for him to get inside the top 16 and this is something he’s aware of.
When discussing rankings though he made a comment that would lift many eyebrows! He said:
“I’d like to get to number one and retire on the spot. That would cause a lot of grief.
“I’m enjoying what I’m doing though. I’ve spoken with my manager, Premier League, I’ve done it for so many years, fantastic.
“Couldn’t do it now.
“16 weeks away from home, you’ve got Europeans, Pro Tours, I just couldn’t do it.
“Hat’s of to the youngsters that are doing it because they’ve got some travelling to do in the next couple of years.”
We’re sure he was joking about pushing for the number 1 spot but it’s an interesting take on the travel required in order to be successful when it comes to rankings.
This is something you don’t really think about but for players like Dave Chisnall or Stephen Bunting who seem to play in everything you’ve got to wonder how they manage it!
