9 Funniest Moments in Darts History

Darts isn’t the most serious sport on the planet. While the modern game is definitely more ‘professional’ than previous eras, there’s still a good number of characters.

Not just characters but also incidents.

Considering it’s just players standing in front of a board and throwing darts, there’s been some hilarious moments over the years

We’ve compiled a list of some of the funniest moments in darts history and trust us, some of these are iconic darts moments!

Funniest Moments in Darts History

Mervyn King FUMING with Michael van Gerwen Celebration

Let’s start this list off with a banger.

During the 2020 Players Championship Finals, Michael van Gerwen checked out a stunning 160 finish to go 6-4 up against Mervyn King.

MVG lets out a roar to the crowd and this leaves King visibility fuming at the celebration.

Mervyn King is known as a good darts player but if there’s something else he’s known for in darts is giving the most exaggerated facial expressions you will ever see on the oche!

Justin Pipe Celebration

Another heated moment between players that was actually hilarious to watch.

Justin Pipe won the match and gave an odd Rocky-esque celebration.

Kevin Painter wasn’t happy about it, the pair had a heated moment which resulted in Pipe then further extending his celebration with an attempt at breakdancing.

This is one of the wildest celebrations we’ve ever seen in darts

Gerwyn Price Ear Defenders

There’s no denying that Gerwyn Price is one of the most heckled and booed players we’ve probably ever seen.

The 2021 World Championship winner and three-time Grand Slam of Darts champion always seems to brush it off though and will usually play into his pantomime villain persona.

Whether he’s insulting the crowd in post game interviews or even whistling back at them after being heckled (classic!), without a doubt his ear defenders stunt goes down as the funniest…

In a match where he was ‘affected by noise from the crowd’, Price took to the stage wearing a set of ear defenders.

No one knew if that was allowed (officials included) as it was such a strange thing, it had never been seen before.

Needless to say this action has gone down in meme and darts history both for entertainment and just for being a bit of a sore loser.

It’s worth mentioning that at the time of writing this in 2025, Price has seemed to turn opinion around quite a bit with a positive mindset and some blockbuster performances so far this year.

An in form Price is truly blockbuster but even with his new attitude to darts, there’s always the suspicion he could pull more ‘antics’ in the future.

Mensur Suljovic Thought He Won the Match

9-9 tied with Terry Jenkins. The viewers can see the scoreboard says ‘must win by two clear legs’ but Mensur Suljovic doesn’t see this.

He takes out D2 and proceeds to put on a very exaggerated celebration for winning a leg.

For a moment no-one knows why he is reacting like that and suddenly Suljovic (and everyone else) realise that he thought he’d won the game.

That is one of those moments where you look back on as the person and can’t stop cringing.

Colin Lloyd Dartboard Punch

There are always heated moments in any sport, and darts is no different.

Usually it’s arguments between players, fans, or both, but in one instance, Colin Lloyd took his frustration out on the dartboard.

Lloyd scores 55 in a closely contested match against Welge tied 2-2 on sets, and when collecting his darts from the board, he lets out a display of pure anger and punches the dartboard.

You see the board momentarily cave in against the backdrop (showing he hits it with some force) and later you see he actually damages his knuckles with a visible cut.

A tightly compacted sisal dartboard combined with steel wires is not something you want to be punching, even in a moment of just blind rage.

This was probably a more shocking moment in darts history but it’s also pretty funny to watch back if we’re being honest.

Ted Hankey: “Who’s in Charge? Me or the Devil?”

One of the most viral darts clips of all time is Ted Hankey speaking to himself at the oche and askling “who’s in charge? Me or the devil?”.

This is a truly legendary moment that people commenting to say they know nothing about darts, have never heard of Hankey but rate this as one of the best moments in sports history!

We couldn’t sum it up any better.

Dirk van Duijvenbode Busts 180

In the 2016 World Championship, Dirk van Duijvenbode was drawn against former winner and runner-up Raymond van Barneveld in the first round of his tournament debut.

At 1 set down and 2 legs a piece, ‘The Titan’ had the opportunity to put the pressure on a Barney 121 outshot but bust a 180 in the most bizarre circumstance possible.

The commentators really made this worse. They are hyping him up after back to back trebles only for him to bust what most would think is an un-bustable (not a real word but feel appropriate) number for a professional!

Amateur players watching must be fuming to see moments like this. You spend years trying to hit your first 180 while pro players can hit it completely by accident.

Keegan Brown Announced VERY Wrong During Walk-on

One of the unique things about darts is the walk-on. It builds the hype in wrestling or boxing but for some reason, it’s one of the best aspects of darts.

During a walk-on you get announced, more accomplished players obviously get more hyped up introductions but the best of all time has to be Keegan Brown.

Seen in good spirits during his introduction, that soon changes when the announcer calls him Boris Krcmar.

That look on his face when he hears the build up followed by ‘Boris Krcmar’ is priceless!

For those unfamiliar, Boris is a Croatian giant of man which just makes the mix up even funnier.

THAT Michael van Gerwen Moment

We could watch this on repeat all day long!

No idea what MVG is doing here but there are some of the craziest facial expressions we’ve ever seen.

Mervyn King has nothing on that one.
