Gerwyn Price has had a year to forget when it comes to darts.
The 2021 World Darts Championship winner has comfortably been one of the best players in the world for several years after reaching 15 PDC major finals since 2017 (winning 7 of them).
He’s also won dozens of titles on the ProTour and European Tour and the reason we are mentioning all of these accolades is because he’s not been able to replicate anything like this in 2024.
In PDC major tournaments so far, he’s only made it as far as the fourth round. He finished 7th in the Premier League which is a drastic fall from a runner-up position in 2023 and hasn’t won a title on the Tour circuit.
He has won two World Series of Darts events in 2024 but these are invitation-only events.
This has all culminated in Price failing to qualify for the Grand Slam of Darts which is set to take place later this week.
Price has won the Grand Slam of Darts the joint-second most number of times in the tournament’s history, tied on three wins with Michael van Gerwen and only trailing Phil Taylor who won it six times.
The Iceman doesn’t shy away from public statements and has been venting his frustration throughout 2024 saying he won’t play in the Premier League again and saying he just wants to play in ranking events.
This led people to question if Price is committed to darts or if he is planning to retire and earlier this week he responded with a decision on his future…

Gerwyn Price Issues Statement to Instagram on Darts Future
While the Grand Slam of Darts draw was made, Price – who missed out on qualification this year – took to instagram to post a statement on his future in darts.
Price wrote:
“When the last 10 years have been constant travelling, darts or down time with the family, you lose touch with everything else going on around you without even knowing it.
“Now, there’s no darts, it’s like trying to fill a void. I finally realise my life is darts and without it, I don’t know what to do with myself. Fortunately, or unfortunately for some, you’re all stuck with me.”
Gerwyn Price has business ventures outside of darts including a chip shop in his hometown and former cafe that he’s set to turn into flats.
Many people believed these were early signs that Price was lining up an exit from darts and it’s also something that he’s hinted at in the past.
This recent statement now confirms that it is obviously not enough to satisfy his competitive nature though.
Price is a former professional rugby player and if you’ve seen him on the oche, you know how fiercely competitive he can be – if not a bit too over-the-top at times 👀
Whether you like him or not, it seems like Price is around for good now so it will be interesting to see if he can put 2024 down as a career blip and get back to his best in 2025.
