Mark Webster Reveals ‘One Regret’ From His Darts Career

Mark Webster or “Webby” will be a familiar face to most darts fans, old & new.

If you’ve joined the darts hype within the last few years, you’ll likely know him as a darts analyst and commentator for Sky Sports and ITV.

His coverage at major tournaments alongside the likes of Emma Paton and Wayne Mardle is well received with many enjoying his analytical takes on players and matches.

Before his tenure on the mic though, Webster had a very successful career at the oche.

The Welshman won the 2008 BDO World Championship and spent a decade as a professional player in the PDC from 2009-2019.

He couldn’t lift a major title as a pro, but two semi-final runs at the World Championship and runner-up at the Players Championship Finals were some notable achievements.

Webster’s career was cut short though due to struggles with dartitis – making him one of the most high profile players to suffer from this condition.

He lost his Tour Card in 2019 and didn’t enter 2020 Q-School which is what led to his eventual transition into commentating.

Despite his struggles with dartitis, Webster has revealed to Stephen Bunting that his biggest darting regret came early in his career when he’d just become a World Champion…

Mark Webster Thinks He Should Have Copied Stephen Buntings Transition to the PDC

In a recent video, Mark Webster joined current world number four Stephen Bunting on his popular YouTube channel, The Bunting Effect, for a casual ‘throw and chat’.

Both players won the BDO World Championship before making the transition to the PDC and seeing further success as a professional.

Bunting’s recent resurgence though has seen him win the 2024 World Masters, make the semi-finals of the 2025 World Championship and secure a place in the 2025 Premier League.

While Webster admits he’s not good enough to replicate what Bunting has achieved later in his playing career, he revealed that he regrets not replicating what Bunting did earlier in his career.

He said:

“You went straight away didn’t you [joined the PDC after becoming world champion], that was my only regret.

“You went and you were flying, you won a tournament within a week.

“I maybe should have gone straight away but I was in the middle of an apprenticeship. I think you did the right thing and I was kind of envious that you were doing that.”

Webster was a fully qualified plumber but after his 2008 title win, he wouldn’t become a professional with the PDC until a year later in 2009.

This meant he didn’t ride the ‘momentum’ of the World Championship win that he says Bunting did successfully by switching straight away.
